Stax Records and Cartoon from Dick Bruna

“Stax Records is a record company from Memphis, U.S., well-known for producing excellent soul music. Otis Redding, one of the greatest singers in U.S. history, who unfortunately died in the 60s, was represented by the record label. The orchestra cartoon on the left is from Dick Bruna, one of my favourite Dutch artists known for creating Nijntje (Miffy). As both items are about music, I guess it’s quite apparent that I’m interested in the topic. So much so that I used to play in a band and still play music together with children at primary schools where I work as a volunteer.”

Mask from Ghana

“When we set up the Cultural Psychology master’s, we wanted to create a link between the UvA and a university in Accra. So, we went there with 15 students and three or four teachers and met up with the Ghanaian students and professors. The exchange was great and we spent around a week there while the students stayed an additional week without us. The original plan was to offer the same exchange to the Ghanaian students, however, they were unable to get a visa for the Netherlands. We were unaware of that as the Ghanaian researcher who was involved in setting up the programme never had issues with getting her visa. But we had to realise the rules were different for students which meant we sadly could not establish the exchange. I bought the mask with said researcher – Annabella – who took us to a local market. She negotiated the price and told me ‘I paid a little bit more but not as much as a normal tourist would have”.

Picture in front of Warung ‘Mini’

“When I became a full professor in 2012, Allard Feddes, a good friend and colleague of mine, gifted me this picture with my nickname ‘Professor Saoto’ written on it. I’m standing in front of Warung ‘Mini’ which is a small restaurant that sells the best Saoto soup, an Indonesian chicken soup. When friends or other researchers come to visit, I always take them there because they have to taste this soup. This is how the nickname came to be and until this day I take whoever is visiting to Warung ‘Mini’.”
