For this issue, we would like to dedicate our Words to Start to one of the deadliest earthquakes of the last century and ways you can help those who are affected by it. On the 6th of February, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern and central Turkey as well as northern and western Syria. Now, eight days later, more than 1.3 million people have been displaced and the death toll has surpassed 40.000. Still, among the horrible news, we keep hearing about a ‘Miracle’ baby being born in the rubble, a little child who was rescued after 105 hours, and thousands of civilians volunteering to help with rescue missions. People across the globe want to help those affected – including UvA students who have collected donations and organised a fundraiser bake sale. In case you would like to get involved as well, keep an eye on our instagram page as we try to repost their initiatives. And – if you have the financial means – potentially consider donating to a (rescue) organisation of your choice e.g., Giro555.
While news outlets are already reducing their coverage on the situation in Turkey and Syria, people continue to be dependent on financial and humanitarian support. Besides the people in Turkey and Syria, UvA students whose families and relatives are affected by the earthquake also keep relying on your involvement. Thus, do not forget to check in with your Turkish and Syrian friends and – if you have the time and energy – keep supporting student-run or official organisations!
