Dear readers,
We hope that you’re all well-rested after the summer holidays, and excited for the new academic year! This issue has also been the last one prepared by the current editors in chief, Mualla and me, and we are proud to introduce you to the new Spiegeloog management consisting of Anushka and Evita. To start off this semester, we compiled a melange of articles and columns under arguably one of the most intriguing topics. Wait no more and read on as we present you with Spiegeloog 420: ‘Taboo’.

In this issue, our editors give their personal touch on several controversial topics.
For this issue’s Tabula Rasa, Rosa reviewed the book Biography of the Uterus, discussing how the uterus really is a marvellous and not always a well-understood organ. Laura contributed to the Corridor with her interview of the Our Bodies Our Voice representatives at the UvA, and David Amodio answered Claire Stevenson’s question about the biassed output in AI in our Ask the Expert column. And finally, Anne wrote a review of the unconventional movie Pleasure depicting the story of a pornstar.
This issue’s articles are definitely not less interesting than the columns. Christine wrote about how religion might influence how people look at their porn consumption, and Ella wrote an insightful article while she was thinking about why we swear so much, and whether being a native English speaker influences how often we swear in English. Evita dived into the whys of networking- why some have a hard time admitting they have used connections when it comes to career opportunities and our conception of fairness. Emma and Emily collaborated and put together an in-depth piece discussing whether the status quo of prisons is (im)moral, and Vadim struck everyone by the absolutely interesting article on sex fetishes. Nina delved into the Dutch law against sexual violence, and wrote about its flaws in how it benefits offenders rather than victims. Lastly, we show you last year’s winning propaedeutic thesis, by Irene DiGiorgio, which touches upon the relationship between academic learning and humour.
